MIGRATION AGENT REGISTRATION
In 1992 the Migration Agents Registration Scheme was established to regulate the migration advice industry with the aim of preventing poor and misleading advice being given to visa applicants.
The Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) was established to regulate the migration advice industry. MARA has the power to register migration agents, regulate the conduct of migration agents and impose sanctions including the cancellation or suspension of migration agents' registration. MARA keeps a public register of all registered migration agents. This register can be seen on the MARA website at www.themara.com.au
Migration agents operating in Australia are required by law to be registered with the Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA). Some migration agents operating outside Australia are also registered with the MARA.
All registered migration agents must:
- meet the qualification requirements for registration, which include a sound knowledge of Australian migration law and procedures (for initial registration) and ongoing professional development activities (for subsequent registration);
- be of good character; and
- abide by the Migration Agents Code of Conduct which they are required to display in their offices
Migration Law is complex and constantly changing. Using a migration agent enhances the likelihood of a positive outcome by easing the myriad of complex procedural matters and amendments associated with visa applications and government agencies
