Notwithstanding certain visa categories require the Applicant to speak, read, write and comprehend the English language fluently. For those that have no English or limited English ability there are two programs available, depending on the individuals English ability: If you have recently arrived in Australia and require a basic level of English to get you started, the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is for you. If you are seeking permanent residency and employment in Australia, and already have a basic level of English, you will need the Advanced English for Migrants Program (AEMP). Children are helped through the 'English as a second language new arrivals' scheme. This program is an intensive language tuition course offered to school students. High school students must attend “High School Preparation” tuition classes which is offered at certain High Schools. Certain Visa categories require all Dependants to have a proficient understanding of the English Language; otherwise all dependants over 18 will be required to pay a second VAC fee to DIBP.
